The Lab · Infinity mirror

Live · runs on your camera

The room recedes into itself

At the back of Velázquez’s Las Meninas hangs a small mirror. In it are the king and queen — standing exactly where you stand to look at the painting. In r/w health, Adam turns that mirror on the audience: the room appears inside the painting, the view pushes into the mirror, and then the mirror finds itself, one frame older, darker and smaller each time, until the room falls away to infinity. This is that same mirror, running on your camera.

the mirror

Tap Start, then go deeper, twist it, or put yourself in Las Meninas and step through the painting the way the room does on stage.

How it plays
on stage

Four beats, one press of the clicker each — the room watching itself become the painting.

  1. 01

    The painting

Las Meninas fills the screen. At the back of the room, the mirror holds the king and queen — the people standing where the audience now sits.

  2. 02

    The room in the mirror

The camera turns on the audience and the room replaces the royals, graded live to the painting’s own colours and laid in with short flat touches of the brush.

  3. 03

    Into the mirror

The view pushes into the mirror until the room fills the screen — the audience looking at itself from inside a 1656 canvas.

  4. 04

    The mirror in the mirror

Each frame is fed back into the next, a little older, dimmer and smaller, framed in gilt: the room recedes into itself without end.

The feedback is synthetic — canvas to canvas, never a camera pointed at a screen — so it can never run away, and it works in any room, on any projector.

Put your audience
in the painting

On stage the mirror is the whole room at once — hundreds of people discovering they are inside the picture. Bring it, and the rest of the Lab, to your event.
